We no longer stock Alder firewood, but there’s no need to worry — we’ve got even better alternatives that burn hotter, longer, and cleaner.

Alder was once a popular choice because it lights easily and gives a nice flame, but compared with other hardwoods, it burns quite quickly and produces less heat. Our current hardwood range offers the same easy lighting with much better performance.

The Best Alternatives to Alder Firewood

Ash & Beech Blend

Our most popular hardwood combination — the perfect balance of easy lighting, long burn time, and strong heat output.

  • Burns longer than alder

  • Great steady heat and clean flame

  • Suitable for stoves and open fires

Birch

Birch is a great alternative if you loved how easily alder lit. It catches fast and gives a bright, attractive flame.

  • Quick to light, even in cooler chimneys

  • Lovely flame for evenings and smaller stoves

  • Perfect paired with denser hardwoods like hornbeam or oak

Hornbeam

If you’re after longer burn times and high heat, hornbeam is hard to beat. It’s one of the densest hardwoods available.

  • Very long burn time

  • Consistent heat, low ash

  • Ideal for overnight burning

Oak

Oak gives deep, steady heat and long-lasting embers once fully established. It’s a great choice if you find that Birch or Alder firewood burns far too quickly on your fire.
