Kiln Dried Oak Firewood
Kiln dried Oak is considered one of the best fuels for log burners, multifuel stoves and open fires. Because Oak is a naturally slow-growing hardwood, it is extremely dense. That density is what gives Oak its reputation for being a long-lasting, high-heat, “load it and relax” kind of fuel.
When Oak is kiln dried, the moisture content falls below 20%, which means it lights more easily, burns more efficiently and produces very little smoke or soot. If your goal is to keep a room warm for hours without constantly opening the stove door, Oak is the right choice.
Why Oak Burns Longer
Different woods burn differently depending on how dense their fibres are. Oak has a naturally tight grain structure — each log contains more stored energy than softer woods. Once lit, Oak produces a deep, rolling heat that builds gradually and remains consistent for a long period of time.
Birch, by comparison, is a quicker-burning hardwood. It produces an immediate flame and fast heat, which is brilliant for getting the stove going, but it burns through more rapidly. Oak takes a little longer to catch, but once it’s burning, it becomes a slow-release heat source. Many of our regular customers will start their fire with Birch and then switch to Oak once the stove is hot.
Why Kiln Dried Is Better Than Seasoned
Seasoned wood is wood that has been left to dry naturally, usually for a year or more. The challenge is that seasoned wood often looks dry on the outside, but can still be damp inside the log — especially in hardwoods like Oak, where the fibres are tightly packed. Damp wood burns cooler, produces excess smoke and can leave tar deposits in the flue.
Kiln drying removes that uncertainty. The wood is dried in a controlled chamber until the moisture level is consistently below 20%. This gives you cleaner glass, a hotter burn, less ash and more heat from every log.
Who Oak Is Best For
Oak is ideal for anyone who uses their stove or burner regularly and wants a fuel that gives heat for long periods without fuss. If you enjoy shutting the door and letting the stove do its job, Oak suits that type of heating. It’s also perfect for larger rooms, older houses with thick stone walls, and those who light a fire in the afternoon and want warmth right through the evening.
If you’ve ever found yourself constantly topping up the fire with softer woods, switching to Oak will be a noticeable upgrade.
However, with all this being said, Oak isn't for everyone. Due to it's density, some people find it difficult to work with.
Oak is more difficult to light, and it doesn't burn with a bright, roaring flame. If you're new to burning firewood, or are making a transition from Birch or Ash firewood, we would always recommend calling down to either of our shops and trying a net of Oak, before committing to a bulk load.
Delivery & Storage
Kiln dried Oak can be stored indoors or outdoors. If storing outside, keep the top covered but allow the sides to breathe to maintain airflow.
All Kiln Dried Firewood should be stored in dry place. Leaving your logs outside in the rain will take away all of the benefits of buying dried firewood.
Our crane-off delivery service means we can place crates or bulk bags exactly where you want them — on a drive, by a gate, near a log store (access permitting) — without leaving it on the pavement or kerbside.

We also supply various size builders bags of mixed Oak & Birch, for those who want the benefits of dense, long burning firewood (oak), with the benefit of a softer hardwood (birch) to get the fire going, and give off that quick heat.
