Why Buy From A Supplier on the BSL

What is the BSL?

The Biomass Suppliers List (BSL) was introduced to support the governments Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI). The RHI encourages fuel users to switch to a renewable source of energy, such as biomass wood pellets, by offering a monetary payback reward.

The BSL is a list of wood fuel that meets the eligibility requirements of the Renewable Heat Incentive. Fuel types registered on the BSL include; wood chip, wood pellets and wood briquettes. For a wood fuel to be on the BSL, it must be at least 60% less carbon intensive than its EU fossil fuel equivalent. It must also meet the UK Timber Standard for Heat and Electricity’s definition of legal, and sustainable wood fuel.

Why was the BSL introduced?

The BSL was introduced to allow participants of the RHI to easily demonstrate that their fuel usage complies to the standards of the incentive.

When you buy a fuel that is on the BSL, you will receive a BSL certificate number. This number needs to be passed on to Ofgem when you apply to receive your quarterly repayments entitled to you as an RHI participant. Ofgem is the government body who are responsible for the Renewable Heat Incentive.

The BSL certificate number on a fuel easily demonstrates to Ofgem that your fuel usage complies to the RHI.

Why should you buy from a BSL Supplier?

Buying from a BSL supplier gives you the piece of mind that your biomass fuel is sourced responsibly, and from a sustainable source. As an RHI participant, it also gives you the piece of mind that your fuel meets the RHI’s criteria, and that you will be eligible for your repayments, entitled to you by being a part of the scheme.
